How to read the marathon pace chart
Find the goal finish time, then check the pace per kilometer and pace per mile. The checkpoint columns show the cumulative time for an even-paced race at 5K, 10K, halfway, and 30K. A 4:00:00 marathon, for example, is 5:41 per kilometer, about 9:09 per mile, and 2:00:00 at halfway.
The marathon is 42.195 kilometers, so the 30K checkpoint is not three quarters of the way through the race in terms of the finish line. Use the exact distance columns rather than estimating from a percentage.
From chart to race plan
A chart is most useful when it becomes a small number of checkpoints. Choose a goal, write down the halfway and 30K targets, and use the splits calculator for a printable table at your preferred interval. The final 12 kilometers are where a pace plan is tested.
Even splits are the simplest default. A negative split means the second half is faster; a positive split means it is slower. The total time stays the same in the calculator, but the distribution changes.
Marathon pace and conditions
The chart uses flat-distance arithmetic. Course elevation, wind, heat, fueling, and congestion can make the required effort different from the displayed pace. Use the number as a target band and adjust based on the race conditions rather than forcing a watch value.
If you train with treadmill speed, use the pace/speed converter. If you plan a track session, use the splits calculator with a 400m interval and remember that 42.195 km is not a whole number of laps.
Frequently asked questions
What pace is a 4-hour marathon?
A 4:00:00 marathon is about 5:41 per kilometer or 9:09 per mile.
What pace is a 3:30 marathon?
A 3:30:00 marathon is about 4:59 per kilometer or 8:01 per mile.
What pace is a 5-hour marathon?
A 5:00:00 marathon is about 7:07 per kilometer or 11:27 per mile.
What is the halfway split for a 4-hour marathon?
An even 4:00:00 marathon is 2:00:00 at halfway.
How far is a marathon?
A standard road marathon is 42.195 kilometers or 26.2188 miles.
Does the chart account for hills?
No. It uses flat-distance arithmetic; course and weather can change the effort required.
