These results calculate a pacing scenario from your inputs. They do not predict your fitness or guarantee that a target is achievable.
How 5K pace is calculated
5K pace is finish time divided by 5 kilometers. A 25-minute 5K is exactly 5:00 per kilometer, about 8:03 per mile, and 12 km/h. A 30-minute 5K is 6:00 per kilometer, while a 20-minute 5K is 4:00 per kilometer. Those figures are useful for race planning and for translating a goal into a training pace.
The number you see is an average. A fast first kilometer can make the remaining 4 kilometers harder than the arithmetic suggests, so use the 2.5K checkpoint to check whether the first half was controlled. The calculator does not predict fitness or guarantee that a target is achievable.
5K pace chart
| Goal time | Pace / km | Pace / mile | 2.5K checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20:00 5K | 4:00 /km | 6:26 /mi | 10:00 |
| 25:00 5K | 5:00 /km | 8:03 /mi | 12:30 |
| 30:00 5K | 6:00 /km | 9:39 /mi | 15:00 |
| 35:00 5K | 7:00 /km | 11:16 /mi | 17:30 |
| 40:00 5K | 8:00 /km | 12:52 /mi | 20:00 |
These rows show average pace for the official distance. For an intermediate time or a custom race distance, use the calculator above.
How to use the 5K pace calculator
Enter the finish time you want to plan for. The distance is fixed at 5 km, so the result immediately shows pace per kilometer, pace per mile, km/h and mph. The table below covers five common goals and gives the even-effort halfway time.
A 20:00 5K requires 4:00 per kilometer or 6:26 per mile. A 30:00 5K requires 6:00 per kilometer or 9:39 per mile. For a goal that is not in the table, type the exact time into the calculator instead of rounding to the nearest row.
What is a good 5K pace?
A good 5K pace is one that produces a strong finish without a large fade after the first kilometer. Beginners often benefit from a controlled start and a small acceleration in the final mile. More experienced runners may target a specific personal best, but the target should still be supported by recent training or race evidence.
A 5K is short enough that almost everyone feels energetic at the start. That is exactly why patience matters. Use the first kilometer to establish rhythm, the halfway point to check the plan, and the final kilometer to spend whatever is left rather than spending it all early.
5K pacing on race day
For an even split, aim for the same average pace throughout and pass 2.5K near half of the finish time. For a negative split, start slightly slower and make the second half faster. A positive split is the opposite. The split planner can model any of these scenarios using your target time.
Do not chase a single noisy watch reading in the first few hundred meters. Course congestion, GPS lock, and excitement can all distort the display. Settle into a sustainable rhythm and check the average pace at the halfway point instead.
5K pace in kilometers and miles
Five kilometers is 3.1069 miles. As a result, a 5:00 per kilometer pace is about 8:03 per mile — a useful conversion for runners who train in one unit and race in another. The calculator displays both values to avoid unit confusion.
On a treadmill, 12 km/h corresponds to a 5:00 per kilometer pace on a flat, calibrated machine. Incline, treadmill calibration, and changes in stride can still make the effort different from outdoor running. Use the speed conversion as a planning tool, not a guarantee of race performance.
Frequently asked questions
What pace is a 30-minute 5K?
A 30:00 5K is exactly 6:00 per kilometer, about 9:39 per mile, and 10 km/h. The halfway checkpoint is 15:00.
What pace is a 25-minute 5K?
A 25:00 5K is 5:00 per kilometer or about 8:03 per mile. The halfway checkpoint is 12:30.
What pace is a 20-minute 5K?
A 20:00 5K is 4:00 per kilometer or about 6:26 per mile. The halfway checkpoint is 10:00.
How far is a 5K?
A 5K is 5 kilometers, or about 3.1069 miles. This page uses the standard 5-kilometer distance.
Should I run a 5K with even or negative splits?
Either can work. Even splits are the simplest baseline, while a small negative split can help you avoid an overly fast first kilometer. A large positive split is usually harder to recover from.
Can I use this calculator on a treadmill?
Yes, for the arithmetic conversion. Enter the goal time to get pace and speed, then compare the result with the treadmill display while allowing for calibration and incline.
Does the 5K calculator include warm-up or walking?
No. The result describes the average pace for the full 5 km race. Warm-up, walking breaks, and stops are not separate inputs.
How do I print a 5K pace plan?
Calculate the target pace, open the split planner, choose a 1 km or 1 mile interval, and print the checkpoint table for race day.
